Direct Carbon at VertiFarm Dortmund: Innovating the Future of Vertical Farming with Direct Air Capture Technology

This past week, Direct Carbon had the privilege of attending one of the leading industry events in vertical farming—VertiFarm Dortmund. As pioneers in the carbon removal space, the event offered us a unique platform to meet, collaborate, and brainstorm with some of the brightest minds in controlled environment agriculture (CEA).

At VertiFarm, we saw how the vertical farming sector is undergoing a remarkable transformation. With climate change presenting an urgent call for more sustainable and resilient food systems, CEA is poised to lead the way. It was truly inspiring to connect with industry experts, visionary growers, and innovators committed to solving some of the most pressing challenges facing modern agriculture.

Our Spotlight Moment

One of the highlights of our participation at VertiFarm was the opportunity to take the stage and share our journey, insights, and vision for the future of sustainable farming. Our presentation focused on the game-changing potential of Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology in the CEA space. For us at Direct Carbon, sustainability in farming goes beyond improving yields or reducing resource use—it’s about helping growers decarbonize their operations.

We introduced the audience to the innovative ways in which DAC technology can revolutionize the carbon footprint of vertical farms. By capturing CO₂ directly from the air and providing it to growers as a resource for optimal plant growth, we enable carbon-neutral and circular farming practices. This integration offers a dual benefit: improving productivity while addressing the urgent need for carbon reduction.

Key Takeaways from VertiFarm

The conversations we had and the insights we gained at VertiFarm were nothing short of transformative. As we discussed the future of vertical farming, four core themes emerged:

  1. Sustainability is a Priority: The entire industry is united in its recognition of the need for sustainable practices. Growers are eager to adopt innovations like ours that can simultaneously increase yields and reduce their environmental impact.
  2. Collaboration is Key: We saw the immense value of cross-industry collaboration. Many stakeholders are now realizing that sustainable solutions require integrated approaches, blending technological innovation with practical applications in farming operations.
  3. Innovation is the Future: The future of vertical farming lies in its ability to adapt. From automation and smart technology to innovative carbon management solutions, the sector is pushing boundaries to create farms that are as efficient and climate-friendly as possible.
  4. A Comeback for Vertical Farming: After experiencing a slowdown in recent years, vertical farming is now poised for a strong resurgence. With the growing demand for resilient and sustainable food production, coupled with advancements in technology, the sector is ready to reclaim its place as a cornerstone of the agricultural landscape. The renewed focus on innovation, particularly in areas like carbon management, is breathing new life into vertical farming.

Looking Ahead

As we reflect on our time at VertiFarm, we are more energized than ever to continue driving innovation in carbon removal for agriculture. Our mission is to support the next wave of indoor farming by enabling decarbonized, resource-efficient operations that benefit both growers and the planet.

We are incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to share our vision with the VertiFarm community and to engage in meaningful dialogue with industry leaders. We are excited to continue fostering partnerships that will further shape the future of vertical farming, powered by sustainable solutions like DAC.

Stay tuned as we continue to innovate and collaborate to make vertical farming more sustainable, one carbon molecule at a time.
